‘Shang-Chi’s Destin Daniel Cretton Set to Direct ‘Spider-Man 4’: Will Tom Holland Now Appear in ‘Shang-Chi 2’?
Marvel Studios had been looking for a new director for a few months when Jon Watts decided to step down to focus on other projects outside of the MCU. The former director recently said that the success of ‘No Way Home’ will be tough to repeat, so it’s a good idea to step away while things are still at their best.
For months, several names have been suggested as possible directors for the film, including Destin Daniel Cretton, who directed ‘Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.’ Now, The Hollywood Reporter says that Cretton is officially in talks to direct the movie.
Marvel’s Kevin Feige and former Sony head Amy Pascal will produce the project. Holland and Zendaya haven’t officially signed on for the project yet, but they’ve had detailed discussions with the executives and are likely working out new terms. The movie begins filming in early 2025.
Not much is known about the upcoming movie’s plot, but for months, industry insiders have speculated that it will either focus on a street-level story or explore the multiverse. After the recent SDCC announcements and the new direction of the ‘Avengers movies, the latest reports suggest the movie will be a multiversal story, following ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home.’
Will we see Tom Holland in ‘Shang-Chi 2’?
Furthermore, since one director is now involved in both franchises, it’s not a stretch to think Spider-Man might appear in ‘Shang-Chi 2,’ and Shang-Chi could appear in ‘Spider-Man 4.’
Very little is known about the plots of both movies, but ‘Shang-Chi 2’ is expected to explore the origin and purpose of the Rings, which are hinted to play a major role in upcoming multiversal events.
‘Spider-Man 4’ is also rumored to be heavily focused on the multiverse, and including Shang-Chi in it could address his storyline, especially since, as Liu mentioned last year, his sequel appears to have been “pushed back” due to factors outside of Cretton’s or Liu’s control.
Although Spider-Man and Shang-Chi haven’t yet crossed paths in the MCU, they have worked together in the comics. Shang-Chi has even trained Spider-Man in martial arts to enhance his fighting skills after losing his spider sense. They’ve also teamed up against common enemies and been part of larger superhero teams, like the Avengers.
